A private school in Hyderabad, Success School, has fired teacher Shaik Aisha after she allegedly assigned a Hindu student homework to learn and recite the Kalma, an Islamic declaration of faith, sparking parental objections and a political controversy. The parents of the six-year-old student reported that their son's homework diary contained instructions to read the "1st and 2nd Kalma" and "Fatiha," with a similar entry having been previously struck off. The school management stated the assignment was an "inadvertent error" as most students are Muslim and attend Islamic studies, a subject not taught to non-Muslims, and that the entry was mistakenly placed in the wrong diary, while police have initiated a preliminary inquiry.

A private school in Hyderabad has terminated a teacher after she allegedly assigned a Hindu student homework to learn and recite the Kalma—an Islamic declaration of faith—triggering objections from the child's parents.

According to reports, Success School issued a termination letter to teacher Shaik Aisha on Thursday. The letter stated, "You are permanently disqualified from applying for employment in any institution under the Success Group of Education."

The controversy began after the parents of a six-year-old student alleged that his homework diary for July 15 instructed him to read the "1st and 2nd Kalma" and "Fatiha" as part of his assignment. The parents approached the school management, questioned the entry and demanded strict action against the teacher.

They further claimed that a similar instruction—"Read Kalma"—had appeared in the child's diary on July 11 but was later struck off, apparently after the teacher realised that the assignment did not apply to a non-Muslim student.

The incident soon sparked a political row, with several BJP leaders visiting the student's family and demanding a thorough investigation into the school's functioning.

Police have launched a preliminary inquiry into the matter. According to reports, the teacher told investigators that there are 25 students in the class, of whom only one is Hindu. She reportedly said the homework entry was inadvertently written in the Hindu student's diary.

The school management maintained that the incident was an inadvertent error. It said that most students at the school are Muslims and attend Islamic studies classes, while non-Muslim students are not taught the subject. According to the management, the homework assignment was mistakenly entered in the wrong student's diary.
