A fire broke out in a five-storey building inside Mamura in Sector 66 under the Phase 3 police station area on Wednesday.

Two people have reportedly died in the blaze: a man and a 26-year-old woman.

More than 100 people were rescued from the blaze with the help of a ladder in the building opposite the one that caught fire. About 50 families were inside the building when the fire started.

The fire reportedly started after an electric bike’s battery exploded.

Several are reported to be injured.

Teams from the fire department rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation, and are attempting to control the blaze.

Relief and rescue operations are underway.

Rajeev Narain, Joint Commissioner of Police, Gautam Buddha Nagar, said that the fire was triggered by an electric vehicle that was being charged. The blaze then spread to nearby petrol-powered vehicles.

Naraian also said that two people suffered health complications due to smoke inhalation. "The building had parking on the ground floor, not a basement. Smoke from the parking area travelled upwards, affecting the occupants. The two individuals whose condition deteriorated due to the fumes were immediately shifted by ambulance to the district hospital. We will provide updates on their condition. They have already been taken to the hospital. Each floor accommodates about five families, with around 12 rooms configured as two-room flats. Rescue operations were conducted continuously to evacuate all the occupants safely," he said.

Fire department officials and senior officers, including the DCP, are present at the scene.

A shopkeeper who was an eyewitness to the incident shouted for people in the building to evacuate when the blaze started, allowing many to escape in time.

Two people have also been taken into custody. Narain said that an FIR has been registered and that the building owner and the leaseholder were arrested as part of the investigation.
