An 18-month-old, Devansh Suhaurya, tragically passed away after receiving anaesthesia for a cut lip treatment at Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, Kerala
An 18-month-old child in Kerala named Devansh Suhaurya has died following complications after receiving anesthesia for a lip injury, prompting his grieving family to protest and demand accountability, alleging medical negligence. The child's parents brought him to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur for treatment of a cut lip sustained on July 5th, but his condition reportedly deteriorated critically after the anesthetic was administered for suturing, leading to his transfer to the Kannur unit and subsequent death. The police have registered a case against the hospital's anesthetist, Dr. Anjali Poduval, under a section of the BNS pertaining to acts endangering life or personal safety, based on the family's complaint. The family further alleges they were informed about needing plastic surgery and that a doctor would only attend upon payment of a fee, and that risks of anesthesia were not disclosed. The hospital, however, has denied medical negligence, stating the child experienced an unexpected cardiac arrest post-anesthesia and was provided advanced care, while also refuting claims of forced medication.
