The family of 9-year-old Amaira Meena, who allegedly died by suicide at a school in Jaipur, Rajasthan, has released CCTV footage from her classroom, showing the moments leading up to the incident. Amaira was a 4th-grade student. On November 1st last year, she reportedly jumped from the 4th floor of the school after facing intense bullying from classmates. She was taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead.
According to the family, the five-minute video footage shows the girl entering the classroom, talking to a classmate and taking part in a dance activity, before fellow students bully her.
In the video released by her parents, Amaira is seen approaching the teacher with folded hands, asking for help multiple times after allegedly being bullied by her classmates. Following this, she is seen walking up the stairs of the school, eventually halting at a spot where she climbs over the wall.
Amaira's father, Vijay Meena and mother, Shivani Meena, alleged that their daughter sought help multiple times, but the school failed to respond in time. The family claims that the chargesheet filed by the Jaipur police in the case was improper and demanded that action is taken against the school, it's founder and principal.
At a press conference held at Pink City Press Club, Vijay and Shivani, along with members of the Sanyukt Abhibhavak Sangh, highlighted that the chargesheet excluded the names of school principal Indu Dubey and found Saurabh Modi, despite there being clear evidence of negligence from the institution's side. They demanded a fresh investigation and added charges of possible abetment, besides Section 75 of the Juvenile Justic (Care and Protecion of Children) Act.
Rajasthan Police have recently filed a chargesheet in the case. The release of the footage has resulted in public fury over the school's negligence and how they failed to adress complaints of bullying. The school has not responded with a public statement regarding the latest developments surrounding the CCTV footage. The incident remains under investigation and is being presented before the court.
