Rain updates | Mumbai–Pune train services suspended; schools shut; university exams postponed
Several long-distance trains were cancelled, diverted, short-terminated or rescheduled
Heavy rainfall across Maharashtra has led to significant disruptions and casualties, with at least 10 lives lost due to flash floods and landslides. Train services on the crucial Mumbai-Pune route were suspended following landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala section, resulting in the cancellation, diversion, and rescheduling of numerous long-distance trains. Road traffic also experienced disruptions, particularly on the Pune-Mumbai carriageway, due to a landslide near a tunnel. In Mumbai, a three-storey chawl collapse in Mankhurd claimed at least six lives amidst the incessant rain, with rescue operations ongoing for a potentially trapped individual, while separate tree-collapse incidents in the city resulted in two further fatalities. In response to the severe weather, all government, private, and civic-run educational institutions in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar were declared closed for the day, and Mumbai University postponed examinations scheduled for July 6, with revised dates to be announced.
