Following a significant defeat in recent assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress has experienced another major setback with the resignation of Chandrima Bhattacharya, the party's state president and a close confidant of Mamata Banerjee, from all her party posts; Bhattacharya's appointment to this role was part of a broader organizational restructuring in June after Banerjee dissolved all party committees, and her departure is seen as a considerable blow, especially as the TMC grapples with internal factionalism and a significant portion of its Lok Sabha MPs defecting to support the BJP-led NDA government.

The Trinamool Congress is facing yet another setback after its defeat in the assembly elections.

Chandrima Bhattacharya, the TMC’s state president and a close confidant of Mamata Banerjee, handed in her resignation from all party posts she held on Saturday.

The development is being considered a major blow to the party.

In the letter Bhattacharya wrote, "Respected Didi, I hereby tender my resignation from the post of State President of All India Trinamool Congress which had been conferred on me in the meeting at Kalighat on 03.06.2026. I also hereby resign from all other post which I hold at present."

"Please note that I withdraw myself as the authorized signatory of All India Trinamool Congress and all other related organization in respect of the accounts maintained in Various Banks. I also withdraw myself from being your authorized person before the Election Commission of India.

At the end I would like to state that I have highest regards for you and will remain ever respectful to you," she concluded.

Battacharya was appointed to the position to replace Subrata Bakshi on June 3, after Banerjee dissolved all the party committees and restructured the organisation. She was previously the former finance minister and presented the vote on the budget in February ahead of the assembly elections.

Bhattacharya, however, said that she did not know who prepared the budget. “When the budget was prepared, I was not consulted. I got to know just before the budget was presented," she said. “Who wrote it, I don’t know, but there are many people who write it, but I knew about the budget before people knew the details. To maintain secrecy, I too didn’t know details of the budget," she added.

The TMC was split into factions led by Banerjee and the leader of the opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee, in the state assembly.

The former minister was present at her office room, Trinamool Bhavan, on Friday when the Ritabrata bloc allegedly captured the ground floor of the party office. Bhattacharya said that the group did not enter her office until she left. “They didn’t come to my office. They were on the other side. They came to my room after I left,” she said.

About 20 of TMC’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs also merged with the National Citizens’ Party of India and pledged support to the BJP NDA government.

Chandrima Banerjee has been one of the faces of the Trinamool Congress, and she is considered to have a strong hold on both the government and the organisation.

Mamata's party members have criticised Bhattacharya for leaving her when she is not in power, despite being given important posts in the party and portfolios in the cabinet.

MLA Kunal Ghosh, who is part of the Mamata faction, said, "She was at an important post and made a minister; that time she had no issue.”

"She is the party president. We requested her to sit for a while. She said no and sat in her car and left," Ghiosh added
