Casualties, flash floods, and sheer misery—Mumbaikars are reeling under a heavy spell of monsoon rains. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), downpours will continue across Maharashtra on Friday. Mumbai is likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall, with some areas expected to record up to 200 mm of rain within a 24-hour period.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from low-lying areas, beaches, rivers, and overflowing drains. With waterlogging and flash flood alerts active across several zones, officials have advised citizens to exercise extreme caution. 

Heavy rain has been reported in several western areas, including Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar, Vile Parle, and Bandra. 

Also, heavy rain is reported in the cities of Kalyan, Badlapur and Ambernath in Thane district. Vasai, Nalasopara and Virar areas adjacent to Mumbai have also received heavy rains. 

Traffic also slowed down due to waterlogging in low-lying regions. 

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, with neighbouring districts including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad also expected to receive heavy downpours. Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in place for the Pune, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. 

A yellow alert has also been issued for Jalgaon, Nashik, Kolhapur, Satara, Beed, Hingoli, Latur, Nanded, Dharashiv, and Parbhani districts. 

Rain activity is likely to remain strong across many parts of Maharashtra until July 7.

The southwest monsoon further advanced to more parts of Gujarat, the remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. Moderate to heavy rain is predicted mainly in Central India and some parts of Northwest India till July 9.
