A 32-year-old YouTuber known on social media as ‘Road Safety Wala’ was arrested by Delhi police on Wednesday for allegedly targeting women riders and minor girls for videos.
The accused, who was identified as Gurman Singh, allegedly posted objectionable videos on social media and YouTube to gain online popularity and money.
The arrest was made after the father of a minor filed a complaint alleging that on June 2 , two men intentionally rammed into his minor daughter’s scooter from behind. They then followed them and made inappropriate remarks and used abusive language.
The father said that days later, he found videos of his daughter on YouTube and one of the accused’s social media accounts.
According to DCP Hareshwar V Swami, a team led by Inspector Vokas Budak investigated and arrested Singh, who is pursuing an open graduation course from Khalsa College in Delhi.
Police said that his YouTube channel had around 21,000 followers and that his social media accounts have another 2.1 lakh followers.
Singh admitted that he created the videos to increase his following and make content go viral during interrogation .
He also confessed to deliberately targeting women riders for personal gratification and for greater online engagement.
Singh reportedly identified women riders and pillion riders, including minor girls, and intentionally rammed into their vehicles. To avoid suspicion, he would apologise by saying “Sorry, Didi.” He would then follow them with a lewd comment and try to get their personal details.
“The investigation involved extensive digital and technical analysis of the social media content and associated electronic evidence,” said an officer. “Further examination led to the recovery of multiple videos, screenshots, account-related data and other digital evidence allegedly linking the accused to the creation, possession and uploading of the objectionable content,” the DCP said.
He would then upload the videos of the incidents on social media without the victim’s consent.
Police have recovered his mobile phone and said that action has been taken to take down all his accounts.
