About 3 kilograms of gold jewellery worth over Rs 4.39 crore was recovered from the house of Nadia Zilla Parishad member and Trinamool Congress leader Tina Bhowmik Saha and her husband. They have subsequently gone missing, police said on Wednesday.
Tina Bhowmik is a close aide of the arrested Trinamool Congress leader and former Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta.
Police said that the couple was not present when the search began on Monday night. The raid continued until Wednesday in the Nadia district of Tehatta.
Tina’s parents' house and the in-laws' houses were also searched.
Her elderly mother-in-law told police officers that the couple had gone to work together on Monday, and she had not spoken to her son and daughter-in-law since then.
Police suspect the couple went into hiding after the recovery of the massive amount of gold.
Sabyasachi Dutta, meanwhile, was arrested by officers of Bidhannagar South police station earlier this month, on multiple charges including extortion and illegal assets.
The Bidhannagar City police conducted the raid based on information obtained from Dutta.
He claims that the gold does not belong to him and refused to sign the seizure list that was prepared in connection with the recovery of the gold.
The police have recovered receipts for the purchases of the gold from Dutta’s Rajarhat flat and bank locker.
The former mayor was defeated by the BJP’s Sankar Chatterjee from Barasat in the recent assembly elections.
After his arrest, he was investigated, and police found that he acquired a large quantity of gold using proceeds from extortion and black money.
Duta may have also used his influence to help his close aides.
Tina is a school teacher by profession.
Police are investigating how she got the gold.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders have referred to Tina as Sabyasachi’s ‘girlfriend’
Minister of Panchayat and Rural Development Dilip Ghosh said, "Many people's girlfriends have run away. What can be done now? It is a matter of law; the CID is looking for them. Many people's girlfriends have been caught. Many people's girlfriends are being searched for. This girlfriend culture was widespread in the Trinamool, now it is understood.”
Chief Minister Suvendhu Adhikari also added to the sarcastic comments, saying, "Like the girlfriend of the former education minister, kilograms of gold are being found from the house of the girlfriend of the former chairman of Bidhannagar. All the gold was bought after 2021, and all the gold receipts have been found."
