At least five devotees were killed on Saturday after the under-construction roof of a Hanuman temple collapsed at the Yashwadi region of Maharashtra's Parbhani.

"The rescue teams reached the spot in quick time and took out trapped devotees through coordinated efforts," said Pandurang Mochewad, the tehsildar of the Manawat taluka in Parbhani said, as per a Times of India report.

He added that out of the 30 people admitted to the hostpital, about six were in critical condition after sustaining serious injuries from the roof collapse.

Visuals from the incident show that it had been the wooden pillars attached to the roof under construction that suddenly collapsed inwards on a number of devotees under them.

At the time, the devotees could be seen praying, while a few of the temple staff stood beside them to supervise the area.

The tragedy took place so fast they they had little time to react, and were quickly trapped under the debris.

Rescue operations are now underway on a war footing, as locals and the authorities search for more citizens trapped under the rubble.

As the cause of the collapse is still unknown, it has caused caused widespread panic in the entire area.

"The injured in this incident are receiving treatment. Local administration officials are at the scene, and relief and rescue operations are also underway swiftly," read a statement from CM Devendra Fadnavis' office.

PM Modi also condoled the loss of lives in the temple tragedy, saying that he was "deeply saddened" by it.
