Uttar Pradesh minister Om Prakash Rajbhar of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party claimed that the Samajwadi Party (SP) is facing a significant split, with several ministers allegedly ready to defect to the BJP, citing concerns over ongoing investigations into the mining scam and Gomti Riverfront project as the primary drivers of this internal turmoil. Rajbhar further alleged that SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav has already approached Union Home Minister Amit Shah with a letter, a claim dismissed by SP leaders Akhilesh Yadav and Rajeev Rai, who characterized Rajbhar's statements as mere political rhetoric rather than factual pronouncements. While the BJP has remained silent on the matter, a potential split within the SP, the principal opposition in Uttar Pradesh and a major challenger to the BJP in the state, could have substantial implications for the opposition alliance in the upcoming political landscape, especially given the SP's considerable electoral performance in recent state and national elections.

Uttar Pradesh minister Om Prakash Rajbhar claimed that the Samajwadi Party was headed for a major split and that several of its ministers were ready to join the BJP on Wednesday.

The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party minister posted on X saying that the SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav had submitted a letter to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the first move.

He also claimed that the unease within the SP led by Akhilesh Yadav was due to old probes linked to the mining scam and the Gomti Riverfront project.

“A major split is going to happen in the Samajwadi Party. Ram Gopal Yadav has submitted a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah ji. Everyone in Uttar Pradesh knows who the mastermind behind the mining scam and Gomti River Front scam is. As the noose tightens, the SP is getting anxious. Forget Maharashtra and Bengal – the entire SP is sitting ready to join the BJP," Rajbha said.

“Don’t keep your attention only on Maharashtra; it is UP’s number now. Didn’t you see that Ram Gopal ji has given a letter to Amit Shah ji and told him that these are the names, call them and take them with you, but keep us safe," he said while speaking to ANI.

The BJP have not commented on the matter.

Meanwhile SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav in response to the claims said, "how long will their ‘benefits and songs’ continue”

SP MP Rajeev Rai also dismissed Rajbhar's claims. He said that the minister was fond of talking.

"I had said in the Lok Sabha elections of Ghosi that there is a disease of 'bakbak-itis' (talkativeness/chatterbox). Now if there is no cure for it, then are we responsible for that? Why do you take all three of them (father and sons) so seriously? This disease also spreads pollution. Don't ask," Rai said.

A split in the SP could create significant damage to the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh. IT is the biggest challenger to the BJP in the biggest state in the country.

In 2022, it won 111 of the state's 403 seats, emerging as the principal opposition. In the Lok Sabha elections, it won 37 parliamentary seats in 2024.

The minister's statements are currently considered political strategy rather than claims based on fact.
