Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee faces new legal challenges following a police complaint filed at the Siliguri Cyber Cell alleging provocative remarks made during the recent West Bengal Assembly election campaign, with the complainant citing statements that could incite political tension and public apprehension, including references to consequences after the election results and invoking the Union Home Minister's name. This complaint emerged as a West Bengal CID team visited Banerjee's Kolkata residence to serve a notice related to an investigation into similar alleged poll rally remarks, a day after he was questioned by the CID for six hours regarding a signature forgery case. These developments occur in the aftermath of the BJP's landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, which ended the TMC's 15-year rule.

Amid the ongoing turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), fresh trouble has emerged for party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee after a police complaint was filed against him over alleged provocative remarks made during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign.

The complaint was lodged on Friday by Sanjay Kumar Singhal at the Siliguri Cyber Cell police station. Singhal alleged that statements made by the Diamond Harbour MP during election rallies were capable of creating political tension and public apprehension.

"The statements, as publicly reported and available through video recordings, appear to contain warnings and remarks referring to consequences after the conclusion of polling and declaration of election results," the complainant alleged.

"In my understanding, certain portions of these speeches may be perceived by members of the public as intimidating, provocative, or capable of creating apprehension and political tension," he added.

Speaking to ANI later, Singhal claimed that Abhishek had made several remarks during the election campaign that were "not in accordance with the law".

"How can a Member of Parliament break the law? In the remarks he made on May 4, he invoked the name of the Union Home Minister. An individual considers himself so powerful that he openly challenges the country's Home Minister," he said.

The complainant maintained that his objective was not to harass anyone but to demonstrate that the rule of law is supreme.

"He (Abhishek) was making highly provocative statements. It makes me shudder to think back to the violence of 2021. Had they won, given the rhetoric they were using, I might not have been in a position to file a complaint by 2026. That trust has now been established," Singhal said.

Meanwhile, in a different case, a team of the West Bengal CID on Friday visited Abhishek Banerjee's residence in Kolkata's Kalighat area to serve a notice in connection with an investigation into the alleged remarks made during a poll rally.

The CID team reportedly reached Abhishek's residence in the afternoon but did not find the MP at home.

The development comes a day after Abhishek was questioned by the CID at its headquarters for nearly six hours in connection with a signature forgery case related to the selection of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

West Bengal went to the polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The BJP registered a landslide victory, ending the TMC's 15-year rule in the state.
