Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Sushmita Dev, has resigned from her position, becoming the second TMC parliamentarian to do so within 48 hours following Sukhendu Sekhar Ray's resignation, which intensifies internal party dissent. Dev stated her decision was personal and attributed it to her own reasons, declining to comment directly on TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, though she acknowledged her gratitude to the people of West Bengal for her parliamentary tenure. Shortly after her resignation, Dev met with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which she described as a courtesy visit, and she indicated that her future political plans are undecided, stating she needs time to consider her next steps, potentially including a sabbatical.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Sushmita Dev, submitted her resignation to the Chairman of the upper house of parliament on Wednesday. This is the second TMC RS resignation in 48 hours after Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigned on Monday, putting the TMC in a tighter spot with two factions of dissident leaders in the parliament and the West Bengal assembly.
“The reasons are my own, the decision is my own, and I don’t have anyone to blame,” said Sushmita Dev.
“You can ask their MLAs what is happening in Trinamool. I have left Trinamool, and I won’t comment on Mamata didi,” stated the former MP.
Soon after submitting her resignation, Dev was seen meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Dev, however, termed it a courtesy visit.
“I have never stayed in one party and served another party,” added the Assam leader.
Dev, however, said she is not directly involved in West Bengal politics and chose not to comment on TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, adding that her decision to resign is a long story. The Assam leader nonetheless stated she is grateful to the people of West Bengal for giving her a chance to be an RS MP through the strength of their MLAs in the state assembly.
Dev also said she found it strange that TMC Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee praised Sukhendu Sekhar Ray’s decision to resign.
The former TMC MP did not reveal her future plans immediately, saying she wants to be on a sabbatical for a few days and decide which party she wants to be part of or whether she wants to stay on in politics.
“I am an organisation person. I also don’t know what I will do, and I need some time to think,” said Dev.
