The South West Monsoon has made significant progress, entering south Konkan and covering parts of Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh after its delayed arrival in Kerala, bringing heavy rains to these regions and forecasting continued showers in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Northeast India over the next week, with further advancement expected into Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and other Northeast areas within two to five days. The monsoon is anticipated to reach Delhi between June 25 and 30 and Uttar Pradesh between June 20 and 25, following its typical pattern of advancing through South India in early June, then moving towards Central and Eastern states in the following weeks, ultimately reaching Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh by late June, and Northwest India in early July, though the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautions that weather changes could alter these timelines. Concurrently, a heat wave alert is active in several northern and eastern states until June 12, while 17 states are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Sunday, accompanied by strong winds up to 90 km/h, with Delhi facing a cloudy Sunday but clear skies thereafter, leading to a potential temperature rise to 41-42 degrees Celsius on Monday and Tuesday.

The South West Monsoon is rapidly advancing and has entered south Konkan, covering many parts of Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The weather phenomenon arrived in Kerala last Thursday, three days after its normal onset date, bringing with it heavy showers across the state.  

According to the latest IMD update, the Monsoon has reached most parts of the
central-western and central-eastern Arabian Sea, as well as parts of Goa, Karnataka,  Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. While it will bring heavy rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Northeast India over the next seven days, it may further advance into Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and other parts of the Northeast within the next two to five days.

In Delhi, the IMD predicts, the monsoon’s arrival will happen between June 25 and 30. In Uttar Pradesh, this monsoon may arrive between June 20 and 25.

The pattern is that the monsoon gets active over most parts of South India on the first week of June, while it advance3s towards Central India and eastern states in the second and third week of June. It will reach Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and parts of western Uttar Pradesh by the last week of June, while Northwest will see the showers during the first week of July. However, the Meteorological Department has clarified that due to change in weather conditions, some difference in these dates is possible.

Heat wave alert

While a heat wave alert is in place in many states, including Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Western Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, between June 8 and 12, Sunday might see moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in 17 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Strong winds of up to 80 to 90 kilometres per hour are also possible during this period.  

The IMD predicts a cloudy Sunday for Delhi, while the sky will remain clear on Monday and Tuesday, causing a temperature rise. The temperature could reach 41 degrees  Celsius on Monday and 42 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
