In a shocking incident, a BJP leader was accidentally shot dead by her own licensed gun in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur.

The deceased, Sangeeta Rajak, 38, died after she suffered from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The incident took place at around 1 m and 2 am on Sunday in the New Shobhapur area.

Sangeeta had reportedly heard a commotion outside her residence.

When she and her husband went out to check, there was reportedly a group of miscreants outside the residence making trouble.

Hearing this, the BJP leader had walked back into the house to bring out their licensed pistol to hand over to her husband, Bunty Rajak. She reportedly wanted to attempt handing over the firearm to her husband and brother-in-law during the dispute.

In the commotion and panic, the trigger was pulled, and the bullet hit Sangeeta.

“Sangeeta Rajak (38) succumbed to a gunshot injury at a private hospital. A case has been registered and evidence is being collected as part of the investigation,” Ranjhi police station house officer (SHO) Umesh Golhani told PTI.

“She was bringing out a licensed gun kept inside the house to hand it over to them when it accidentally went off, resulting in a bullet hitting her in the abdomen,” the officer said.

Police officials from the Ranchi police station said that preliminary investigations suggested that the shooting was accidental.

Police are, however, investigating the matter from all angles.

Sangeeta Rajak had contested from the Gokalpur ward on a BJP ticket in the last municipal elections. However, she had lost. She was preparing to contest the next time as well.

Sangeeta’s husband had also served as a former MLA representative. He had served as the vice president of the Veer Savarkar Mandale and as a booth president.

A few days ago, a number of miscreants had reportedly thrown an explosive outside his house and vandalised his car. He had also filed a complaint with the police on the same.
