Authorities are investigating the discovery of a male torso, estimated to be around 35 years old and headless with all limbs missing, found inside an abandoned, locked blue suitcase near a staircase at Perambur railway station in north Chennai. A male torso was found stuffed inside an abandoned suitcase at the Perambur railway station located in north Chennai on Friday.

A probe is underway to identify the man.

The Government Railway Police have also launched a murder investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the crime are yet to be established.

According to the police, passers-by noticed that a blue suitcase was abandoned near the staircase leading to platform No 4 around 7:15 am. A porter also found that a foul smell was emanating from the case and notified the railway police.

A Government Railway Police officer said that they also found bloodstains on it.

The GRP told The New Indian Express, “As the railway station infrastructure is being upgraded under Amrit Bharat, the CCTV cameras there have been uninstalled for the time being. There is no footage available from within the railway station. We are relying on the footage from shops outside the station. We suspect more than one person may have brought the trolley suitcase to the station, as it would have been difficult for a single individual to carry its weight.”

CCTV footage collected by nearby surveillance cameras reportedly shows two men arriving at the station in an autorickshaw. The footage is being analysed to trace the suspects.

GRP personnel and the Railway Protection Force found that the torso was in a decomposed state.

The man is believed to be around 35 years old.

There were no clothes, and all four limbs and the head were missing.

The torso was also wrapped in a red plastic sheet, placed inside a sac and then locked inside the trolley bag.

The body was sent to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Investigators are also checking missing-person complaints and other records to ascertain the victim’s identity.

Police are probing the identity and the motive of the person who killed the man and whether more than one person was involved in the disposal of the body.
