The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a red alert in Delhi as thunderstorms and gusty winds were expected across the city.

The red alert covers all districts of Delhi, including Central, East, New Delhi, North, North-East, North-West, Shahdara, South, South-East, South-West and West Delhi.

The Met department said gusty winds with speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, are expected during the period. It also predicted a possibility of hail at isolated places.

Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.

For June 5, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in Delhi with a forecast of generally cloudy sky. It has predicted a spell of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

This comes as the southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on Thursday. Typically set for arrival in Kerala on June 1, it marks the beginning of the monsoon season in India.

"The southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, some parts of westcentral and eastcentral Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep islands, Kerala and Mahe, some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of Comorin area, southeast Bay of Bengal and some more parts of southwest, westcentral, eastcentral and northeast Bay of Bengal today the 4th June, 2026," the IMD said.
