TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly attacked near Chanditaala Police station in West Bengal's Hooghly district when she arrived to submit a deputation regarding post-poll violence. He was accompanied by Trinamool Congress party workers.
A video of the incident shows the TMC leader lying on the ground and speaking on the phone while surrounded by several people.
Banerjee later staged a protest, shortly after the alleged attack, with TMC workers gathering near the police station and raising slogans.
Speaking to reporters, he alleged that the BJP workers attacked him while he was on his way to the police station.
“I was coming alone; there was no one with me. BJP members used abusive language and hit me on the head with a deuce ball. My head is bleeding... Now people will decide whether it is right or wrong that MPs are being continuously targeted..." he said.
Banerjee later sat in front of the police station with a handkerchief pressed to his head, where he had sustained an injury.
Meanwhile, Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police Kumar Sunny Raj said that no violent incident took place. An investigation is being conducted into Kalyan's allegations, and video footage of the incident has been collected.
The incident comes just a day after TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district. He had gone to visit families affected by post-poll violence when stones, eggs and shoes were thrown at him by protesters.
The attack was condemned by opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, the BJP denied any involvement in the attack.
