An Uttar Pradesh man was arrested by Angamaly police in Kerala after he broke into a house and attempted to rape a 16-year-old girl who is mentally disabled. The incident took place close to a railway station on Saturday.
The victim reportedly began screaming after the man began the assault. Locals heard the screams and rushed to stop the accused and handed him over to the police.
The police have filed a case against the man, and an investigation was opened.
Authorities said that the man lived close to the girl's home and had been watching the family’s movements. He also knew the surrounding neighbourhood. He had broken into the house when he knew the girl was alone at home. The girl's mother had gone to work.
Authorities are trying to find out how long the man had been in the state and where he works. They are also conducting a background check on the man.
The victim will be provided with medical assistance and counselling.
