With the mandate becoming almost clear in West Bengal, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir is almost certain to win from Nowda, where he has a steady lead over his nearest rival, Sahina Momtaz Khan of the TMC.
The reports are that he is also leading from Rejinagar, where he was initially behind BJP’s Bapan Ghosh. While Kabir has a lead of over 32,713 votes in Rejinagar, he is leading by more than 5,000 votes in Nowda.
Except for Humayun Kabir, none of his party's candidates registered a lead. However, Kabir appeared optimistic: “The fight is still on, let's see what happens. In Rejinagar, the Trinamool candidate has moved to third place. I am fighting with the BJP.”
The other party, which made a good comeback, was CPI(M). Though the party lead in three seats in the morning, the lead reduced to two by the afternoon. The Left is ahead in Domkal, where the initial trend puts Mustafizur Rana ahead by more than a thousand votes. The Left-backed candidate, Mashiur Rahman, is also leading in Sagardighi.
Mamata leads
As the trends become almost clear in West Bengal with the BJP routing the ruling TMC, the nail-biting fight between TMC leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur saw the latter leading over BJP chief Suvendhu Adikari by over 8,000 votes.
After the fourth round, Shuvendu Adhikari managed to win only 8,762 votes against Mamata Banerjee’s 17,244 votes. However, Adhikari is leading in Nandigram, his other seat.
Another seat that caught attention is Jadavpur, where BJP candidate Sharvari Mukherjee is leading by more than 3,000 votes. BJP candidates are also leading in Midnapore, Ghatal, and Keshiari while Trinamool is leading in Keshpur, Dantan, Kharagpur Rural, Narayangadh.
