Amid claims that former cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan Singh may quit the party to join the BJP, reports have emerged that the Punjab Government withdrew the security allotted for Singh’s residence. This comes days after the ruling AAP in Punjab withdrew the security allotted for former MP Raghav Chadha, who switched to the BJP last week. Chadha was, however, provided with Y-category security by the central government.
As per local media reports, the Punjab police withdrew the security allotted to the former cricketer. On Sunday morning, the security personnel deployed at his home in Jalandhar were no longer there. The government vehicle given to him has also been withdrawn.
Though Singh is yet to confirm whether or not he would join the saffron party, the withdrawal of security confirms speculations. Chadha claimed that about two-thirds of AAP's Rajya Sabha MPs are leaving the party to join the BJP. Besides Singh, Swati Maliwal, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Rajinder Gupta and Vikram Sahney were also likely to join the BJP.
There are also unconfirmed reports that the central government has decided to increase the security of Harbhajan Singh after assessing the possible threats and the current situation. Now the responsibility of his security has been handed over to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
On Sunday, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers protested outside the houses of Rajya Sabha members Harbhajan Singh, Ashok Mittal and Rajinder Gupta. In Ludhiana and Jalandhar, workers spray-painted "traitor" on the walls of their houses.

If the mass exit happens, this could be a major political setback for AAP in the Rajya Sabha. The Aam Aadmi Party earlier had a total of 10 members in the Rajya Sabha, but now two-thirds of these MPs have left the party. After this development, the party now has only three members: Sanjay Singh, Narayan Das Gupta and Sant Balbir Singh. This decline is not just limited to numbers; it could also affect the party's strategy and its national standing.
Political experts believe more leaders could leave the party if the situation is not resolved soon. For the BJP, this seems to be an opportunity to strengthen its position in Punjab.
