KPCC President Sunny Joseph on Sunday hinted at the possibility of AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal becoming the Kerala chief minister if the United Democratic Front (UDF) wins the assembly polls.

He further said that the decision would be taken only after discussions with the high command and all the senior leaders. However, he did not rule out the possibility of Venugopal, who contested from the Alappuzha constituency, for the CM post.

V.D. Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala are also being touted as the most likely Chief Ministerial faces for the Congress in the current political situation.

Earlier, while speaking to Malayala Manorama, Joseph had said that he has no plans to be in the CM race. "Congress never projects a chief ministerial candidate before elections. The high command will decide who becomes CM. I confirm I am not in the CM race," he had said.

Meanwhile, ruling out a deputy CM post for UDF in the state, Joseph said that no one had expressed any desire for the post.

Responding to the Kannur letter row, Joseph said it was an act orchestrated by the CPM, and he has filed a case with the DGP. He reiterated that he had nothing to do with the letter.

He said that if the DGP does not take any action, he and the opposition leader will approach the High Court and prove to the people of Kerala that this is another 'Kafir' screenshot.

The controversy is over a purported "fake letter" allegedly linked to the KPCC president. The letter, circulated widely on social media, allegedly urged the party high command not to field K.Sudhakaran from the Kannur Assembly constituency and instead backed another candidate. “If it is proven that I wrote that letter, I will resign as MLA and end my political life,” Joseph had said.

The controversy centres on a letter purportedly sent on KPCC letterhead to INC president Mallikarjuna Kharge. The contents allegedly questioned Sudhakaran’s electoral prospects and expressed support for another aspirant, T.O. Mohanan.

Congress leaders have dismissed the document as fake and politically motivated.
