Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-politician Vijay has been booked for allegedly violating the election code during his first campaign rally in Perambur on Monday, ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23.

Vijay is contesting from both the Perambur and Tiruchy East seats in his electoral debut.

Vijay was booked after an election official filed a complaint, alleging that the actor's campaign and the delay in his arrival contributed to traffic congestion. Sources indicate that flying squad officer Kumar submitted the complaint along with video evidence.

According to the complaint, Vijay used 30 speakers, exceeding the number allowed by the Election Commission, and his rally attracted a crowd of over 5,000 people. The complaint further stated that the convoy obstructed the main pathway and blocked an ambulance, raising concerns about public safety.

The Peravallur police booked Vijay under five sections, including public nuisance, unlawful assembly, and obstruction of public pathways.

Earlier, CTR Nirmal Kumar, from Vijay’s party, had approached the Election Commission, saying that his leader had to leave the venue and stop his campaign abruptly due to security lapses and poor crowd management.

Later, Aadhav Arjuna, the election management propaganda secretary of the TVK, alleged in a press conference that the police refused to make the security arrangements on the instructions of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the DMK.

Aadhav said inadequate police deployment led to the traffic congestion in the Villivakkam constituency, where he is contesting. He also said that poor crowd management caused Vijay’s convoy to be stranded for a long time.

On Monday, a huge crowd followed Vijay and his convoy right from Neelankarai to the office of the returning officer at Perambur, where he filed the nomination papers.

Vijay hit the campaign trail shortly after filing his nomination papers, with the crowd steadily growing as he made his way to Kolathur, the constituency of Chief Minister Stalin.

Due to the swelling crowd, it took over two hours for Vijay to cover just a five-kilometre stretch. As a result, he could only speak for four minutes in Kolathur before deciding to head to Villivakkam.

However, the delays and the overwhelming crowd forced him to cancel his plans for Villivakkam. This led Vijay's party and Aadhav to accuse officials of deliberately creating obstacles on the “instructions of the ruling DMK.”
