The 28 Tamil Nadu Assembly seats that the Indian National Congress will be contesting as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) have been announced.

Earlier, Congress MP from Karur, S Jothimani, alleged a total lack of transparency in the grand old party's seat selection process. The MP alleged that the interests of the party have been "completely compromised". "There's no transparency in the party's constituency selection. Our view that seats should be chosen after detailed discussion and with transparency was rejected by those in charge," Jothimani said in a strongly-worded social media post on March 27.
While the DMK is fighting from 164 seats, 70 have been allotted to the alliance partners. Apart from the 28 contested by Congress, the DMDK has been given 10 seats, the VCK 8, the MDMK 4, and the Indian Union Muslim League 2. The two communist parties, the CPI and CPI(M), will contest from five seats each. The Manithaneya Makkal Katchi and Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi have been allotted a couple of seats each, while the Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi, SDPI, Mukkulathor Pulipadai, and Tamilar Desam Party were each given one each.
Meanwhile, fellow alliance member DMDK will fight from Virudhachalam, Virudhunagar, Dharmapuri, Gudiyattam (SC), Salem West, Polur, Pallavaram, Thiruttani, Omalur, and Mailam. Thol Thirumavalavan's VCK, also an ally of the DMK and Congress in the state, will enter the fray from Kattumannarkoil (SC), Cheyyur (SC), Thiruporur, Arakkonam (SC), Tindivanam (SC), Periyakulam (SC), Kallakurichi (SC), and Panruti.
The principal opposition party AIADMK on Friday announced the second list of its party candidates. The AIADMK, which is leading the National Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu, is contesting from 169 seats and it has already announced the candidates for 23 constituencies in the first list and it includes Palaniswami. Tamil Nadu will go to polling booths on April 23.
