‘Prostitutes’ remark on women supporters sparks Vijay’s fury; TVK chief slams DMK

TVK chief Vijay has strongly condemned remarks made by a DMK-affiliated politician who called women supporters of his party "prostitutes"

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief actor-turned-politician Vijay has, on Thursday, lashed out at Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) supporter and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) member Ponraj Vellaichamy over his remarks of calling women supporters of TVK "prostitutes."

Without naming Vellaichamy, who was the former advisor of the late APJ Abdul Kalam, Vijay, in a statement, said such remarks are an affront to the dignity of women.

During an interview, Vellaichamy called the supporters of Vijay "illiterate fools" and had reportedly said, “They (women fans) say that they will be Vijay’s elder sister, younger sister or even a wife. It is a party filled with prostitutes.”

The remarks had attracted widespread criticism.

"A person acting as a supporter of the DMK has, in a most degrading and unspeakable manner, hurled insults at my mothers, sisters, and daughters who are worthy of the pride and respect of this land. On behalf of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, I strongly condemn such opportunistic elements who operate under the patronage and protection of the DMK leadership," Vijay said in a tweet in Tamil.

He also slammed the DMK government for failing to take any action against such individuals.

Vijay said the remarks, which were aimed at provoking TVK, insulted women, and they will give a fitting reply to the DMK in the elections.
