On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved a historic milestone by becoming the longest-serving head of government in India’s history. Modi completed 8,931 days in office—spanning both his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and as Prime Minister—surpassing the previous record held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served for 8,930 days.
This rare accomplishment highlights Modi’s decades of uninterrupted public service and political leadership at the highest levels.
Modi previously held the record as the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat, where he served for 13 years before becoming Prime Minister in 2014, following the BJP's landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
Under Modi’s leadership, the BJP won consecutive general elections in 2014, 2019 and 2024. He is also the first non-Congress Prime Minister to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha and the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full terms and return for a third consecutive term.
Modi is the first Prime Minister born after India’s independence.
Last year, he emerged as the world’s most popular democratic leader, with a 75 percent approval rating, according to a global survey by US-based data analytics firm Morning Consult.
On social media, Modi continues to break records. Earlier this month, he reached 30 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. In February, he became the first sitting world leader and politician to surpass 100 million followers on Instagram.
