Protesters waved black flags and raised “Go Back” slogans at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday as he was on his way to the Dakhineshwar temple.

Earlier in the morning, Kumar had completed his visit to Belur Math in Howrah and was heading to Dakhineshwar when his convoy encountered the protesters. He, however, continued with the temple visit despite the demonstrations.

The CEC had faced similar protests outside his hotel on Sunday and on his way to Kalighat temple on Monday.

Kumar is in the state to review preparations for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. On Monday, he held meetings with officials from law enforcement agencies and political parties. The discussions will continue on Tuesday.

“West Bengal elections will be violence-free, free of intimidation. That is our attempt,” the CEC said.

The Election Commission is expected to announce dates for the 294-member assembly elections later this month.

The preparations are taking place amid a tense standoff between the poll body and the ruling Trinamool Congress, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee staging a dharna over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state.
