External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Monday that the well-being and security of the Indian community in West Asia remain the government’s top priority.
Making a suo motu statement in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said India supports peace and a return to dialogue and diplomacy as the conflict in the region has intensified, raising fears of a wider regional war.
“We will continue to work with the governments in the region towards that end,” Jaishankar said, while calling for de-escalation, restraint, and the protection of civilians.
The External Affairs Minister also said the government remains committed to ensuring energy security, taking into account the availability, costs, and risks in global energy markets.
“Our national interest, including energy security and trade goals, will always be paramount,” he said.
“For us, the interests of Indian consumers have always been, and will remain, the overriding priority. Where required, Indian diplomacy has supported the efforts of our energy enterprises in this volatile situation,” he added.
The Opposition MPs, meanwhile, staged a walkout of the house after their demand for a full-fledged discussion on the issue was rejected.
Tensions in the Middle East remain high as Israel and the United States have intensified airstrikes on Iran, while Tehran continues to target US bases and infrastructure in neighbouring Gulf countries.
Jaishankar said the Cabinet Committee on Security met on March 1 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reviewed the situation, including implications for regional security, economic activity and the safety of the large Indian community in the Gulf.
