Ajit Pawar's successor: Why Praful Patel could lead the race

Ajit Pawar's successor is the central question in Maharashtra's political circles, with experienced leader Praful Patel emerging as a frontrunner due to his political acumen and influence

Following the untimely demise of Ajit Pawar, discussions are underway in Maharashtra's political circles about who will assume his responsibilities in the party and the government. While the chatter is  that the BJP could insist on making Sunetra Pawar the Deputy Chief  Minister, political analysts are now shifting their focus to “outsiders” who could take over the party.

Praful Patel

One of the most experienced leaders in the NCP, Patel is currently the working president of the party and the main strategist during Ajit Pawar's rebellion. He also has good control over the NCP organisation, and his strong political persona in Maharashtra politics makes him a preferred choice. But whether the people of Baramati will accept him or not is a big question.

Local reports quoting party insiders say that though Sunetra Pawar is emerging as the prime choice, considering that her elevation will help emotionally connect workers and preserve the Pawar family's political legacy, her inexperience in politics could work against her, considering Pawar also held important portfolios while being the Deputy CM.

However, Praful Patel has strong connections in the Delhi circle and a deep influence in national politics, which could be detrimental. Praful Patel served as the Minister of Civil Aviation in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2004 to 2011, during which he contributed significantly to the modernisation of the Indian aviation sector. For his work, he received awards such as "Aviation Minister of the Year" and "Reformer of the Year." He has held important portfolios such as Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, which demonstrate his administrative capabilities and experience.

Praful Patel’s crucial role in handling NCP’s legal and Election Commission battles during the party's split could also work in his favour. He has long been considered a close strategist of Sharad Pawar and has a strong hold both within and outside the party. His ability to understand Sharad Pawar's political manoeuvring and respond to them in a timely manner could also make him a great choice.

Patel's strengths are not limited to politics; he is also considered to have considerable influence in the corporate world. From raising resources for the party to handling difficult negotiations with alliance partners, he is seen as a skilled negotiator and manager. This is why many senior NCP leaders favour him taking charge of the party at a time when Maharashtra politics is undergoing a complex equation.

Other names doing the rounds include Chhagan Bhujbal,  a prominent OBC leader in the NCP. Bhujbal has been active in Maharashtra politics for a long  time and is aware of the political situation in the state. However, his defection may create obstacles.

Ajit Pawar's close associate and state president of NCP (Ajit faction), Sunil Tatkare, is also  being considered.
