As cold wave grips northern India, several states have ordered holidays for schools till next week. These include Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Assam and others.
A cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature drops between 4.5 and 6.5 degrees Celsius below the normal average temperature, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weatherman said there is a prediction for cold wave conditions in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan till January 5.
UP school closure till January 5
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced that schools will be closed till Monday, January 5. The order will apply to all classes from primary to Class 12. This will include state, CBSE, ICSE and other boards.
CM Adityanath asked officials to carry out field visits and stop people from sleeping in the open. They were also directed to distribute blankets.
Punjab schools to remain shut till January 7
In Punjab, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that schools will remain closed till next Wednesday.
Guwahati orders school closure till Jan 6
Amid extreme weather in Assam capital Guwahati, the Kamrup Metropolitan district ordered schools to remain closed till next Tuesday. The normal classes will resume from January 7, prioritising the safety and well-being of students, the chief minister's office said in a post.
Winter vacations
In Delhi, schools are closed till January 15 on account of winter vacation.
In Jammu and Kashmir, schools are closed till late February. Classes 8 and below will reopen from March 1 while Classes 9 to 12 will resume from February 22.
In Haryana, the winter vacations are already scheduled from January 1 to 15. In Rajasthan, schools are closed till Monday.
