Eminent Hindi writer Vinod Kumar Shukla died due to age-related ailments at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur, on Tuesday evening. The noted writer was 89 years old.
Shukla breathed his last at 4.48 pm on Tuesday at AIIMS Raipur, Shashwat Shukla told PTI. He was admitted to the hospital on December 2 after experiencing breathing difficulties. The author is survived by his wife, son Shashwat, and a daughter.
A celebrated writer, Vinod Kumar Shukla, was the author of acclaimed novels such as Naukar Ki Kameez, Khilega To Dekhenge, Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi, and Ek Chuppi Jagah. Shukla was regarded as one of the most distinctive voices in Hindi literature and was known for his unique, simple, and deeply evocative writing style.

For his unparalleled contribution to Hindi literature, creative excellence, and distinctive literary expression, Shukla was awarded the 59th Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honour. The award was presented to him on November 21 this year at a ceremony held at his residence in Raipur.
Shukla started writing at 15, and his first poetry collection was published in 1971. Shukla's first novel, Naukar Ki Kameez, was adapted into a film of the same name by filmmaker Mani Kaul in 1999. The eminent writer won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his third novel, Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi (A Window Lived in the Wall). His works have been translated into Italian, Swedish, German, and French and adapted for the stage.
