The Delhi High Court has granted bail to the former BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case.

A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidynathan Shankar suspended the jail term of Sengar, who was serving life imprisonment.

The High Court directed Sengar not to go within a 5 km radius of the victim's house and not to threaten her or her mother.

The court also directed him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh with three sureties of the same amount.

"Violation of any condition would lead to cancellation of bail," the court said.

The suspension of the sentence will remain in effect during the pending appeal in the case. Sengar will also be required to surrender his passport and report to the police station every Monday.

The Unnao rape case

BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was accused of rape in 2017 by a minor girl in Unnao.

The victim attempted suicide outside the chief minister's house after she was denied justice.

There was national outrage when it was reported that the victim's father died in police custody and that she was also involved in a suspicious car accident.

The rape case and the related cases were transferred to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh on the direction of the Supreme Court on August 1, 2019.

The former MLA was convicted of rape and sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25 lakh. He was also found guilty of orchestrating the death of the victim's father.

Sengar’s appeal in the case of the custodial death of the survivors’ father is also pending. He sought a suspension of the sentence on the ground that he has already spent a substantial time in jail.
