Why Pradnya Satav of Hingoli joining the BJP is a major blow for Congress in Maharashtra

Dr Pradnya Satav is the widow of Rajeev Satav, a Congress strongman from Marathwada who even withstood the Modi wave of 2014, and the BJP is most certain to celebrate her decision to switch camps

Congress leader and Legislative Council member Pradnya Satav has resigned from her membership of the Legislative Council in order to join the BJP, according to news reports from Maharashtra. Reports suggest that she had been unhappy within the Congress for some time. The wife of the late leader Rajeev Satav said that she believes her joining the "saffron camp" will help her fulfil the dreams of her husband regarding the development of Hingoli.

The Satav family is known to be very close to the senior Congress leadership. Rajeev Satav was among the trusted confidants of Rahul Gandhi, but Pradnya was feeling uneasy within the party in recent times. When the 2014 "Modi wave" gave the NDA a major boost in Maharashtra, Rajeev was among the two Congressmen who managed to reach the parliament from the state.

Following the demise of her husband in 2021, she was given a seat in the Legislative Council by the Congress. She is currently the Vice President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and was expected to remain in the Legislative Council until 2030, Lokmat said in a report.

What did Pradnya Sativ say?

“My late husband, former MP Rajeev Satav, was a son of Hingoli. He worked tirelessly for the development of Hingoli. Our mother, Rajnitai Satav, devoted her entire life to the development of Hingoli. After Rajeev Satav’s death, I got the opportunity to work in the Legislative Council in 2021, and I received cooperation from everyone," Pradnya Satav was quoted as saying by Loksatta.

"To fulfil Rajeev Satav’s dreams of development and to contribute to the all-round development of Maharashtra under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, we too want to play our part. That is why I am joining the BJP today along with my supporters.”

Satav handed over her resignation to the legislature secretariat on Thursday morning after speaking to Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde, news agency PTI said.
