The Supreme Court-appointed committee to oversee the Karur stampede probe visited the Tamil Nadu town and reviewed the progress of the probe. The monitoring committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, visited the incident site and interacted with investigators.
The monitoring committee, led by Justice Rastogi, visited Veluswamipuram, the venue where the tragedy occurred during a rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The former judge interacted with investigators and district authorities regarding the incident. As many as 41 people died during actor and TVK leader Vijay's rally in Karur in September. Over 50 people suffered injuries in the incident.
The committee also visited farmers' market, lighthouse junction, the bus stand roundabout and other venues for which the TVK requested permission for conducting the rally. Meanwhile, CBI DIG Atul Kumar Thakur also reached Karur and assessed the progress of the probe.

The CBI has so far summoned over 300 people in connection with the probe into the stampede. The Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe on October 13, hearing a plea moved by TVK, demanding an independent probe.
The visit of the monitoring committee comes a day after the Tamil Nadu government challenged the CBI probe over the mishap. The government questioned the top court granting the petitioners' plea through an interim order, before confirming its maintainability. Hearing a plea moved by the TVK, the apex court halted a probe by the Tamil Nadu police's SIT and a one-member judicial commission, and ordered a probe by the CBI.
