Magnitude 6.07 earthquake strikes Andaman and Nicobar islands

An earthquake of magnitude 6.07 struck India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday

The German Research Centre for Geosciences, GFZ, said that an earthquake of magnitude 6.07 struck India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The National Centre for Seismology, however, said the magnitude of the quake was 5.4 and that it struck at a depth of 90 kilometres.

No immediate damage or causalties were reported.

The Andaman region frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location which falls on active tectonic boundaries. The islands come under Seismic Zone V, a very high risk earthquake risk level classification as they lie on the convergent boundary of the Indo-Australian Plate and the Burma Plate.

This is a developing story.
