President Droupadi Murmu appointed Supreme Court judge Jusitce Surya Kant as next Chief Justice of India. Justice Kant will assume office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment through his X handle on Thursday. "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025. I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him," Meghwal tweeted.
Justice Surya Kant succeeds Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, who demits office on November 23. Justice Kant will serve as the chief justice of Indai for about 15 months, and will demit office on February 9, 2027, on attaining the age of 65 years.

Recently, CJI Gavai recommended Justice Kant's name as his successor. Justice Kant, who was born in a middle-class family in the Hissar district of Haryana on February 10, 1962, has had a distinguished judicial and legal career. He served as the advocate general of Haryana before becoming a top court judge on May 24, 2019.
