Amid the massive outrage over the alleged molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore, a Madhya Pradesh minister has sparked a fresh controversy, saying the players should learn a lesson from the incident.
According to the police, the two players, taking part in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, were allegedly stalked, and one of them was molested by a motorcycle-borne man in the Khajrana Road area on Thursday morning. The accused, identified as Akil Khan, has been arrested.
State minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said on Sunday that the players should have kept the local authorities informed while stepping out, as they are very popular in India.
"Players must keep in mind that when they leave their place, their security and local administration should be informed because there is a huge craze for cricketers (in India)," he was quoted as saying by PTI.
Later, talking to a news channel, Vijayvargiya reiterated his statement and said those who are popular should be careful while stepping out.
"Sometimes, players don't realise their popularity. Players are very popular, so they should be careful. This incident has happened; it's a lesson for everyone. It's a lesson for us and for the players as well," he said.
Vijayvargiya's remarks drew sharp reaction from the opposition parties, with Congress leader Arun Yadav terming them as "disgusting and regressive".
"Kailash ji's remark reflects a disturbing mindset; instead of ensuring women's safety, the minister is blaming the victims," he said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray condemned Vijayvargiya's remark, calling it a reflection of a "pathetic mentality in government" .
"What a shame! Obviously the government will not act on him, but in a time when we bid for the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and when we invite investors too, to India, it is shameful to have such a pathetic mentality in the government," Thackeray wrote on X.
"Is it a crime for a woman, be it from a cricket team or not, to walk on the streets of our cities? Instead of acting strongly on the many such incidents faced by women every day, the minister saying such nonsense is a disgrace," he further said.
The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) said in a statement that it was deeply pained and shocked by the disturbing incident of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour with the two players.
"No woman should ever have to endure such trauma, and our thoughts and support are with those impacted by this distressing incident. This unfortunate event has deeply affected everyone from MPCA, who cherishes the values of respect, safety, and dignity of women," the association said.
According to the police, the accused has prior criminal cases registered against him.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Rajesh Dandotiya said after the complaint was filed, CCTV footage was scanned to identify the accused. A massive manhunt was launched, and he was arrested within six hours.
