Cyclone Montha: IMD predicts heavy rainfall in Chennai, holiday declared for schools in this district

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Chennai and surrounding districts due to Cyclone Montha, which is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall over Chennai and neighbouring districts on Tuesday owing to Cyclone Montha.  The cyclone is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday evening.

According to the regional centre of IMD, the cyclone is likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by morning of October 28. According to the weather agency, the cyclone is likely to "cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during evening/night of October 28 as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph."

According to the agency, "Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur district" in 24 hours. "Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Ghat areas of Tirunelveli district; Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Theni, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts on Tuesday," it said.

Meanwhile, owing to intense rainfall, the Yanam district in Puducherry has announced a holiday for educational institutions till October 29. The state government has advised authorities to take necessary precautionary measures as per the weather agency's guidelines.
