As many as nine migrant workers have died after an under-construction structure at the thermal power plant at Ennore near Chennai collapsed on Tuesday. Several workers suffered injuries in the incident, and they are undergoing treatment at Chennai hospital.
According to authorities, an under-construction steel arch structure at the Ennore thermal power plant collapsed on Tuesday, and workers suffered grievous injuries. According to reports, over 30 migrant workers were involved in the construction work, and they suffered severe injuries after the scaffolding collapsed.
As many as five workers succumbed to injuries at the incident site itself and three died en route to the hospital, authorities said. Dr J. Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, and the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) said, "There was an unfortunate incident at the Ennore thermal power plant construction site, where a steel arch fell and nine people died. These people were from Assam and the surrounding areas," ANI reported.

Radhakrishnan added officials from BHEL are present at the site, and injured are undergoing treatment at Stanley Hospital, Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin termed the incident unfortunate and condoled the deaths. Stalin announced a solatium of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and added he has directed authorities to take steps for transporting the mortal remains to their home state.
