The incessant rain that lashed the capital city of Kolkata for the last two days seems to have abated on Wednesday. Though the sun reappeared, water hasn't receded from many areas in the city, including Ballygunge.
The unprecedented rainfall, worst in over four decades - 251.6 mm in 24 hours - threw road, rail and air traffic off gear. Power outages affected multiple areas, adding to residents' difficulties.
However, the Meteorological Department thinks it's too early to heave a sigh of relief. The sky in Kolkata will remain cloudy on Wednesday, and there is also a possibility of rain, according to the Indian Meteorological Department. Rains will be accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph. The sea is rough and the weather will be extremely humid.
The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Wednesday may be around 31 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature may be around 26 degrees Celsius. Although rain is forecast next Saturday, there is no possibility of heavy rain for now. The weather may improve slightly from Sunday, the forecast read.
Not just in Kolkata, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in the entire South Bengal region. Heavy rain may occur in the two coastal districts of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. West Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura will also receive heavy showers till Saturday.
There is no possibility of heavy rain in the districts of North Bengal for now. However, there is a possibility of scattered light to moderate rain in all the districts of the north.
Low-pressure area in Bay of Bengal
The weather experts warned that a low-pressure system may form over the northwest and adjacent central Bay of Bengal on Thursday. It may further intensify and move westwards and reach somewhere between the Andhra and Odisha coasts on Friday. This will cause moderate rains in the districts of Kolkata and South Bengal.
