As West Bengal readies to celebrate Puja, the IMD has forecasted heavy rains during the festival days. The Alipore Meteorological Department has warned that South Bengal districts will witness heavy rain due to the low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal.
According to the weather office's forecast, at least four districts of South Bengal - South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram - are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next few days. Rainfall amounts of 7 to 11 cm are possible in West Midnapore and South 24 Parganas.
While these four districts are likely to receive heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday, all the remaining districts, including Kolkata, will experience scattered rain from Monday till next Thursday. Thunderstorms may accompany the rain.
The Alipore Meteorological Department added that an east-west trough is active. It started from northwest Uttar Pradesh and reached East Bengal via Bihar and North Bengal. As this system is active at a height of about one kilometer above sea level, continuous moisture keeps entering Bengal.
Threat in Odisha too
A low-pressure area has formed over the northeast Bay of Bengal and its adjoining regions, and it is likely to move west-northwestward over the next 24 hours, potentially bringing rainfall to parts of Odisha, West Bengal, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
There is a possibility of a low-pressure system forming around September 25, which may intensify into a depression by September 26. This could lead to widespread showers, especially in eastern and southeastern India, according to reports.
There is also a chance of another cyclonic circulation developing over the Myanmar coast and the adjoining Bay of Bengal on September 30. By October 1, this system is projected to take the form of a low-pressure area and is expected to intensify further. Its impact may bring light to moderate rainfall across the state on October 1 and 2.
