A woman in Kanpur's Colonelganj alleged that her husband and in-laws tried to murder her using a snake over a dowry spat.

This comes weeks after a horrific Greater Noida incident, which saw influencer Nikki Bhati allegedly burnt and tortured in front of her sister and son over a dowry disagreement.

Chamanganj native Reshma alleged that she had been separated from her three-year-old daughter on Friday night and locked in a room. At around 5 AM in the morning, she saw a black snake on her bed, which bit her right leg.

Reshma also alleged that her bedroom door was locked shut for a while by her husband and in-laws, despite her screams for help. When they finally opened the door, she managed to escape to her parents' house.

From there, she was quickly rushed to the Ursula Hospital, and then to the LLR Hospital, a Jagran report said. Doctors confirmed that her condition was "stable, but serious", adding that she was receiving anti-venom treatment for her severe snake bite symptoms.

The victim's sister Rizwana filed a complaint at the Colonelganj police station against Reshma's husband Shahnawaz "Ayan" Khan, as well as six other members of his family.

The problem reportedly began a few days after their wedding in 2021, when Ayan's family demanded Rs 2 lakhs from Reshma's family for building a room.

Her family only transferred Rs 1.5 lakhs. Ayan's family taunted Reshma over this, demanding another Rs 5 lakhs, which her family refused. She was often abused emotionally and physically due to this.

Colonelganj Police Station SI Ugrasen Singh has said that an investigation is currently underway.
