Delhi records wettest monsoon since 2010: city flooded as Yamuna water levels hit danger mark; evacuations underway

The Delhi-NCR region has been facing heavy rains and flooding as the Yamuna River overflowed, crossing the 207-metre danger mark . The rise in water levels has created concerns about potential flooding in low-lying areas.

Many low-lying areas, such as Yamuna Bazar, Geeta Colony, Manju Ka Tila, and Mayur Vihar. The waters also reached the city’s Civil Lines colony, home of the Chief Minister, forcing the evacuation of more than 14,000 residents to safer areas.

The floodwaters from the rising river have even entered some of the relief camps set up at the capital. Authorities have warned residents against swimming, boating, and engaging in recreational activities.

Evacuations are being carried out, and authorities have also set up tents to shift people from low lying areas to relief camps.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, only light rain is expected for the rest of the day, and there is no further weather warnings have been issued.

Monsoon in Delhi

IMD’s data shows that Delhi received an excess rainfall of 72 per cent last month. It was recorded as the wettest August since 2010. Half of the total rainfall, about 400.1 mm, occurred in August. The city logged about 76.6 mm of rain in September already. The monsoon is generally expected to withdraw around September 25, the Times of India reported.

The IMD also noted that Delhi logged about 843.1 mm of rqin this monsoon, which was about 32 per cent surplus from the normal 640.04 mm.

The IMD has predicted that monsoon conditions are likely to prevail over Delhi for the next four days.  “There is a possibility of very light to light rain or thundershowers at most places with moderate rain on Friday. There are chances of very light to light rain thereafter,”  A met official said.

The National Disaster Management Authority NDMA issued an alert via SMS that read "Rainfall with Heavy Rain, thundershowers is very likely to occur at a few places over Faridabad, Gurugram, Jhajjar, Jind, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Nuh, Palwal, Panipat, Rewari, Rohtak, Sonipat, Yamunanagar in the next 3 hours."
