Angry residents vandalise Meerut toll booth where army jawan was pinned to a pole and beaten

Angry locals gathered at the Bhuni toll booth and vandalised property after a viral video surfaced of toll workers assaulting an army jawan. Kapil Kavad was brutally assaulted by toll workers at the toll plaza in Sarurpur, Uttar Pradesh, after an argument. Police have arrested six in connection with the case

Hundreds of residents of Gotka gathered at the Bhuni toll plaza and vandalised the place after the news of the assault on an army jawan broke.

The villagers stormed the toll and vandalised property and confronted the staff at the booths. They demanded the arrest of the employees who assaulted the jawan.

Kapil Kavad, was travelling to Delhi airport with his cousin when he was beaten by poll booth workers at the Bhuni toll plaza in Sarurpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Footage of the altercation that surfaced on social media showed several toll booth workers beating Kavad and restraining him against a pole. The incident took place on the Meerut-Karnal Highway.

Police have confirmed that six people have been arrested and that CCTV footage of the incident is being examined.

SSP Vipin Tanda said, “Last night, a video was received in which some people were beating up a person. When the police investigated, it was found that the complainant was a jawan who was returning to his duty, and he had an argument with the toll workers over something."

The toll workers beat him up. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, a case has been registered. On the basis of the video, six people have been arrested. The toll workers had taken Kavad hostage and had proceeded to tie him to the wall. The workers also snatched his identity card and mobile phone from the man.

The SHO of Sarurpur, Ajay Shukla, said there was a long queue at the toll booth. The jawan, who was getting late to catch his flight, had approached the toll booth employees to ask for permission to get out of the queue. They then asked him to reverse his car, but he refused, saying that he couldn't reverse it any further. “An argument broke out over this, and they finally started beating him,” he said.

Superintendent of police Rakesh Kumar Mishra said that efforts are being made to trace others besides the six men who were arrested, reported the Hindustan Times.
