Hyderabad heavy rain alert: Red alert issued for Aug 13 and 14; GHMC helpline numbers to note

The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the state of Telangana today on Wednesday, August 13

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been placed on high alert over the possibility of heavy rains on Wednesday evening, Telugu news reports said. Emergency teams have been prepared to deal with any situations while residents have been warned against venturing out unless necessary.

Control rooms have been established in Hyderabad as the entire state has been placed under a red alert for Wednesday and Thursday. The Telangana government has also ordered the closure of all schools in five districts for two days, given the red alert issued and declared half-day schools in Hyderabad on August 13 and 14. All schools will be closed for Independence Day on August 15.

There is also a possibility of cloudbursts for the next two days in Telangana. In preparation for the weather forecasts of rain in Telangana for the next 72 hours, Chief Minister A. Revanath Reddy has instructed officials to take necessary steps to prevent the loss of life during the heavy rains.

The chief minister asked officials to ensure that there is no vehicle movement on the flooding bridges, canals and streams and causeways brimming with heavy flows in the low-lying areas, according to an official press release.
