The crowd of Maurya’s supporters chased the youth and beat them with sticks, kicked and punched them.
Police who arrived at the scene later took them away
According to reports, the two accused were part of the Karni Sena. However, the organisation has not made a statement regarding the incident.
Police have said that the attacker blended in with the crowd and pretended to offer a garland before he hit the politician. An investigation is underway to uncover the motive behind the attack, according to the PTI.
It is not the first time Maurya has been attacked in public.
On May 4, 2024, Maurya was pelleted with shoes while he left a public meeting in Agra. The incident occurred after he left the Samajwadi Party, citing ideological differences.
A week ago, Maurya resigned from the post of the national General Secretary, saying that Akhilesh Yadav is going against the 'socialist ideology'. Reacting to Maurya's resignation, Samajwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav had said that he had joined the party during the elections and, despite not winning, the party made him an MLC and sent him to the Assembly.
He said that Akhilesh Yadav is going against the ‘socialist ideology’. Samajhwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav commented on Maurya’s resignation, saying that he joined the party during the election and, despite not winning, the party had made him an MLC and sent him to the Assembly.
Maury’s statements have often created political controversies. In 2023, Maurya had described some verses of the Ramcharitmanas as against the backwards classes and Dalits. It was also after this incident that he was attacked with a shoe. He has recently demanded a caste census for the OBCs and Dalits, which has incited some backlash from other political parties
