At least six people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at the famed Mansa Devi temple in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar on Sunday morning.

Medical teams and ambulances have responded promptly, and the injured are being shifted to the hospital.

According to reports, rumours of an electric current emanating from the stairs to the temple sent the devotees into a panic, leading to the stampede at 9 am.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed sadness over the stampede and stated that the situation was being closely monitored.

"Very sad news has been received about a stampede on the way to the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar. SDRF, local police and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations," Dhami said in a social media post.

"I am constantly in touch with the local administration in this regard and the situation is being constantly monitored. I pray to Mata Rani for the safety of all the devotees," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, expressed grief at the loss of lives.

"Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede on the route to Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected,” he wrote on X.

Dedicated to Goddess Mansa, the temple is perched atop the Shivalik Hills at a height of over 500 feet.
