Based on a complaint field by a woman, a second-year MBA student at IIM Calcutta was arrested for allegedly raping her in the boys' hostel on the Joka campus. However, the woman's father claimed that his daughter was not sexually assaulted and is "fine and sleeping now."
The woman, who is a psychologist, alleged that she went to meet the student for a counselling session at the hostel on Friday. She claimed that the accused gave her pizza and a drink, which believes was laced with drugs. Following this, she lost consciousness and after waking up realised that she was raped, according to the complaint filed at Haridevpur police station.
However, the woman's father later denied the rape allegations and claimed that he received a call from her on Friday saying she fell from a vehicle and that she turned unconscious. "I later on tracked her location, and it was found that she was at SSKM Hospital. The Haridevpur police rescued her after reaching the hospital," he added.
Police are looking at the father's public statement as the investigation progresses. Karnataka-based Mahaveer Toppannavar alias Parmanand Jain, who is the accused in the alleged sexual assault case, was arrested and charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 64 (rape) and 123 (administering drugs or poison). On Saturday, he was sent to police custody till July 19.
The accused's mother told ANI that her son is innocent and can never do such "a dirty thing". "We received a call from his friend around 11 in the night. He told us that my son has been detained and he doesn't know the reason... We have no clue why our son has been arrested... We want to meet our son and talk to him," she said.
