Leader of Opposition in Karnataka, R. Ashoka, has written to the National Human Rights Commission, urging it to take suo motu action over the tragic stampede in Bengaluru and conduct a probe against the Karnataka government, Royal Challengers Bengaluru team and Karnataka State Cricket Association for alleged lapses.
In his letter to the human rights body, Ashoka charged, "This is not merely an unfortunate incident - it appears, based on eyewitness accounts, to be the direct result of gross negligence, mismanagement, and blatant disregard for public safety by the state government and the concerned authorities."
As many as 11 persons died and over 30 persons suffered injuries in the tragic stampede during IPL victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the state capital on June 4. The stampede occurred outside Chinnaswamy Stadium when crowd tried to enter the premises through its small gates.
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader charged lack of crowd control measures and overselling tickets, inadequate security, absence of basic amenities and emergency services and irresponsible conduct of organizers led to the deaths. Ashoka charged though the state government has announced an inquiry commission and the "lack of oversight" is deeply concerning.

Urging NHRC to take suo motu cognisance of the incident, Ashoka demanded the Commission must launch a comprehensive investigation into the roles and responsibilities of all government officials, agencies, and private entities involved in organising the event.
Ashoka urged the NHRC to initiate disciplinary action against those found negligent and provide protocols for such events to prevent such tragedy in the future. He also urged the Commission to monitor the ongoing probe announced by the state government.
