The death of Haryana Congress worker Himani Narwal, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase on Saturday, has sparked off an outrage with her mother alleging that the culprits could be from the party or her friends.

The body of Narwal (22), a native of Vijay Nagar in Rohtak, who had been found walking along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, was recovered from near Sampla bus stand in Rohtak.

The suitcase was spotted by some passersby who informed the police.

Narwal’s mother Savita alleged that her rising stature in the Congress party had made some people jealous. "She was going with Rahul Gandhi. She was close to the Hooda family. This is why people were having problems, they were jealous."

"The election and the party took my daughter's life. Because of this, she made some enemies. These (the culprits) could be from the party, could be her friends as well,” Savita said, adding that she would not perform her daughter’s last rites until she got justice.

According to reports, Narwal was active during the Congress party’s campaign in the Haryana elections.

Savita said her daughter had become slightly disillusioned with the party after the elections. "She said that she wanted a job and didn't want to work much for the party...She was associated with Congress for the past 10 years. She had also agreed to get married. She was pursuing LL.B...I had called up Asha Hooda (wife of senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda) in the morning but my phone call was not received."

Hooda, meanwhile, said the Congress had demanded an investigation into the incident. If the culprit is someone from the party or not can be ascertained only after the investigation, he added.

“The incident should be investigated as soon as possible. I am in touch with Police personnel. I also spoke with SP. They are hopeful that they will get some clues by the evening. I told them that this should be investigated and the guilty should be given the strictest punishment...Whoever it is, if they are guilty, they are guilty. Be it someone in the party or outside, the guilty should be given the strictest punishment,” Hooda told reporters.

He targeted the state government over the incident which he termed as a “blot on the law and order situation” of the state.
